In this edition, former Amazon №2 Jeff Wilke joins San Francisco AI startup Scale A.I. in the role of adviser to the CEO Alex Wang. The company is working to ensure their clients have the infrastructure to systematically deliver higher performance models, including solving a bottleneck in deploying machine learning models, thereby providing better dataset labels for computers to learn better.
Policy
The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI) has released its final report on the NSCAI’s strategy for winning the artificial intelligence era, including Blueprints for Action. The mandate of NSCAI is to make recommendations to the President and Congress to “advance the development of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and associated technologies to comprehensively address the national security and defense needs of the United States.”

How can citizens engage with developments in the field of A.I.? A new book -A Citizen’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence by John Zerilli & Co., provides a concise overview of A.I. ethics and policy. The authors provided a brief overview of the moral, political, legal, and economic implications of A.I. The book covers the basics of A.I.’s latest permutation, machine learning and considers issues such as transparency, bias, liability, privacy, and regulation.
ETT Opportunities
A.I. for Development (AI4Dev) provides funding for ideas in the use of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) to solve challenges related to 4 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AI4Dev is under the auspices of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and facilitated by NilePreneurs, working hand in hand with U.N. Agencies and other local and international organizations.
